Project Information
Body

Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is preparing a Climate Adaptation Plan that builds on the City of Santa Barbara Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan prepared in 2021 and the Goleta Slough Area Sea Level Rise and Management Plan completed in 2015. The Climate Adaptation Plan will address the potential impacts of increased flooding due to future projected sea level rise and increased rainfall with climate change.

The first phase of the planning effort is a climate change and sea level rise hazards analysis and vulnerability assessment. This assessment will use an approach similar to the City of Santa Barbara Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan, but will also incorporate the latest guidance from the Ocean Protection Council’s (OPC) draft 2024 State of California Sea Level Rise Guidance document. In the second phase, SBA will develop a Climate Adaptation Plan that identifies various strategies to reduce the potential future impacts of flooding and sea level rise at the Airport. In the third and final phase, the City will update its Airport and Goleta Slough Coastal Land Use Plan (LUP) to incorporate adaptation-related policies identified from the vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan. Throughout the phases of the study, public meetings and workshops will be held to provide opportunities for community engagement and input.
