Southfield Redevelopment Project and Hangar 5
As recommended in the 2017 Airport Master Plan, construction is currently taking place just south of the SBA Terminal (also known as “Southfield”) for the Southfield Redevelopment Project.
The objective of this project is to provide 50 additional parking spaces for rental cars, as well as three additional spaces on the airfield for overnight aircraft parking.
With these improvements, SBA will have greater flexibility to allow delayed aircraft to reposition away from the passenger boarding bridges until approved for departure. The additional rental car parking will help ensure an adequate number of rental cars are readily available for pick-up and drop-off at the Terminal.
These renovations included the removal and relocation of Hangar 5, which was originally constructed in 1944 for the Marine Corps Air Station. This hangar was purchased by a local citizen and will be repurposed as an office building just down the road in Goleta.
The long term plans for the Southfield area will be incorporated into the larger Terminal Improvement Project (TIP). Construction for the TIP is estimated to begin in 2026.
